Foreign assets
As foreign assets (abbreviation: AVS ) refers to the total inventory of all assets that the government , companies or individuals from one country to other countries - so abroad - hold. These include, for example, investments in foreign companies ( see direct investments ) and financial investments in foreign stocks ( portfolio investments ).
Foreign assets and balance of payments
The foreign assets are closely related to the balance of payments . The international assets contain the stock of external assets and liabilities at a specific point in time . The balance of payments shows the capital flows (investments) during a certain period . The capital outflows (investment abroad) lead to an increase in foreign assets and vice versa bear the capital inflows (foreign investment in the country) to the growth of foreign liabilities in. Does a country invest more abroad than the other way round, i. H. if it exports net capital, net wealth abroad increases. Conversely, the current account shows a surplus in this case. The development of the international investment position is not only influenced by investments, but also by other factors. Fluctuations in exchange rates and precious metal prices as well as changes in share prices are particularly reflected in the stocks .
Foreign debt
Foreign debt or foreign debt is a collective term for all short, medium and long-term obligations / liabilities of an economy to foreign countries from trade and payment transactions as well as from political obligations, such as B. Reparations .
Net international assets
The counterpart to a country's foreign assets are its foreign debts. The balance between the two figures is referred to as a country's net foreign assets, and if the balance is negative, it is referred to as net foreign debt. The total of the net foreign assets and net foreign debt of all countries always results in exactly zero. In order to make statements about the wealth of an economy, the net foreign assets are better suited than the (gross) foreign assets, as high foreign assets can be offset by high foreign debt.
The international investment position for Germany shows the amount and structure of German foreign claims and liabilities towards the rest of the world on the respective reference date.
