Austin Peralta

Austin Topper Peralta (born October 25, 1990 in Los Angeles ; † November 21, 2012 ) was an American jazz pianist and composer .

Peralta, son of filmmaker and former skateboarder Stacy Peralta , began taking piano lessons at the age of six; later he studied with Alan Pasqua and Buddy Collette . At the age of 13 he won the Shelly Manne New Talent Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society . When he was fifteen, he performed with his trio at the Tokyo Jazz Festival .

Between 2006 and 2011, Peralta released three albums, Maiden Voyage (with Ron Carter ), Mantra (with Buster Williams , Steve Nelson and Marcus Strickland ) and Endless Planets (this album only contained original compositions). Peralta also worked on Tim Ries ' The Rolling Stones Project, Vol. 2 and most recently as a keyboardist on the recordings of the Flying Lotus album Until The Quiet Comes . He also played with Chick Corea , Hank Jones Sadao Watanabe , John Patitucci , Omar Hakim , Hiromi Uehara , Erykah Badu and Allan Holdsworth .

Peralta died at the age of 22. The most likely cause of death is given as viral pneumonia with simultaneous use of alcohol , morphine and sedatives . Marcin Wasilewski wrote the ballad Austin (which was released on the album Spark of Life ) in memory of him .
