From 1964 to 1967 she continued her studies at the University of Tartu , but dropped out in the third year of study. In 1968 she graduated from the Vanemuine stage studio as an actress. Alavainu made her poetry debut in the press in 1966 and published her first book in 1973. The criticism saw this in part as “traditional love poetry”, but at the same time repeatedly emphasized the “erotic experience” and the “erotic feeling” that is expressed here. One critic even drew comparisons with Ralf Rond , whose book was pulped in the interwar period for immorality, and said that the poetry was not recommended for under sixteen year olds.

In her other volumes of poetry, too, the love poetry was occasionally praised, although there were also significantly more critical voices. Similarities to Johnny B. Isotamm have been discovered in the overall picture of Estonian poetry , and indeed an innovative element can be seen in their 2002 collection, which is made up of loose sheets of paper and is tellingly entitled Songs to Distribute .

With her epistolary novel Who of us is Napoleon? (1987) she made her prose debut, which goes into detail on the gender difference. The novel has also been referred to as a "psychological novel". The criticism saw here a clear emphasis on the difference between men and women, but also believed that they could identify “de-emancipatory” tendencies.

Ave Alavainu has also written children's literature.
