The Avia B-34 was a Czechoslovak fighter aircraft from the 1930s. Although it was only built in small numbers, it was the forerunner of the B-534, which was produced in larger series .

development

Development work began at the beginning of the 1930s, at the time when Avia merged with Škoda and moved to larger production facilities in Prague-Čakovice. The company's new chief designer, František Novótny , wanted to design a fighter for the Hispano-Suiza-12-Nbr engine , the license production of which was just starting under the name Avia Vr-36. He was guided by the designs of his predecessors, the development team Pavel Beneš and Miroslav Hajn . The model was also very similar to the Avia designs of the 1920s. The B-34 was a tubular steel frame and a fabric-covered biplane with a rigid landing gear and a conspicuous radiator under the engine. In the fuselage there were two fuel tanks of 135 liters each, another for 50 liters in the middle part of the upper wing.

On February 2, 1932, Avia chief test pilot Vačlav Koci took off on the maiden flight. It went well, but minor changes were made. The radiator was moved a little back and fitted with vertical blinds.

The acceptance of the aircraft by the Ministry of Defense dragged on until 1934, only then was a small series of twelve B-34s ordered and delivered. František Novótny decided to fundamentally revise the aircraft and developed it into the B-534.
