The Avia 51 was a Czechoslovakian passenger aircraft that was built in the first half of the 1930s. After the unrealized Avia 50 from 1931, an aircraft of a similar design, it was the first completed design by the designer Robert Nebesář during his work at Avia .

development

The Avia 51 was designed by Nebesář as a three-engine shoulder -wing aircraft with a duralumin hull and fabric-covered wings for the Československá letecka společnost (ČLS), the partner airline of the ČSA . Three copies were built in 1933 and used on the Berlin-Prague-Vienna airline operated jointly with the German Luft Hansa and the Austrian ÖLAG . However, due to the low capacity of only six passengers, the operation of the model proved to be unprofitable, so that all Avia 51 were retired in 1937. Subsequently, the seven - cylinder radial engines Avia Rk-12 with 280 HP that had been used up to that point were replaced by less powerful Walter Regulus engines with five cylinders and 230 HP and sold. The Estonian government acted as the official buyer, but the real buyer was Spain, which was in the middle of a civil war , where the aircraft were to be used by the Republicans . However, only one Avia 51 reached the port of destination Bilbao , the other two were lost when the freighter on which they were transported was sunk.
