Avinash Dixit

Avinash Kamalakar Dixit (born August 6, 1944 in Bombay , now Mumbai) is an American economist and professor at Princeton University .

Life

Avinash Dixit attended the University of Bombay and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics in 1963 . He then went on to study mathematics at Cambridge University , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts . His Ph.D. Dixit received another three years later in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he had worked for three years as a research assistant . Later, in 1972, 1977 and 1994, he was a visiting professor at this institute.

After receiving his doctorate, he became an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley and taught from 1970 to 1974 at Balliol College of Oxford University . At the same time, Dixit held lectures as a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972 . After leaving Oxford University, he became Professor of Economics at Warwick University . In 1980 he became a member of the Econometric Society , of which he was president in 2001. In 1981 Avinash Dixit became Professor of Economics and International Relations at Princeton University . Also in 1981 he was co-editor of the Bell Journal of Economics , which he remained until 1983. From 1990 to 1994 he was again co-editor of a journal, this time the Econometric Society Monograph Series . In 1992 he was in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected in 1996, he was from the Norwegian School of Economics of the honorary doctorates awarded in 2005 he was appointed to the National Academy of Sciences elected. He has been an elected member of the American Philosophical Society since 2010 . After Dixit was President of the Econometric Society in 2001, he was appointed Vice President of the American Economic Association (AEA) the following year. In 2009 he headed the AEA as elected president. On 19 July 2007 he received from the University of Warwick an honorary doctorate of Law ( Honorary Doctor of Laws )

Scientific work

Together with Barry Nalebuff , Dixit transferred the game theory model from mathematics to economics, politics and everyday life. The related book has so far been translated into ten languages, including German, Chinese, Japanese and Hebrew. Dixit also researched principal-agent-theoretical problems in the diamond industry.
