The Avon River is a river in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia . From the confluence of the Wooroloo Brook the river is called the Swan River (Indian Ocean)

geography

The river has its source at Yealering , about 50 km east of Pingelly and flows northwest through the towns of Beverley , York and Northam . At Toodyay it turns its course to the west and at the Avon Valley National Park to the southwest. After crossing this national park, it continues to flow through Walyunga National Park , where it becomes the Swan River.

Catchment area

At Yealering in Wickepin Shire is the source of the Avon River and the catchment area above the confluence with the Salt River in Lake Yealering is 91,500 km².

The catchment basin covers a large part of the Wheatbelt region and in some areas even extends beyond it to near the always dry Lake Moore in the northeast; a regular water inflow can only be expected from the western edge of the basin. In fact, until the unusually wet year 1963, no one knew that water would ever flow into the river from the northeastern part of the basin beyond the Wongan Hills . Under the current climatic conditions, it is almost impossible to get water into the river from areas other than the western edge of the basin because the amount of rain that would cause water to run off is greater than the actual average annual rainfall there.

geology

Due to the extraordinary age of the soils in the basin (which lies on the extremely old Yilgarn - Kraton ) the root density of the native flora is very high and the mean specific washout is probably the lowest among the comparable large basins on earth. The very old age of the soils also means that - at least after the deforestation for agricultural purposes - almost all rivers in the basin have salt contents of more than 0.3%, and many even significantly more. 0.3% salinity corresponds to one tenth that of seawater and about eight times as much as would be permitted for classification as freshwater.

The catchment area runs through some of Western Australia's longest-lived agricultural areas by Europeans and has exceptional soil salinity problems, which has led to government programs to alleviate losses of arable land. Civic groups overseeing projects on the Avon River tributaries received financial support from public and private sources.

River valley

The Avon River Valley is the Eastern Railway's third and final route through the Darling Range between Midland and Northam . This route was built in the 1960s.

This is also where the annual Avon Descent white water race takes place.
