The Mortlock River is a river in the Wheatbelt region in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia .

geography

The river has its source at Belmunging on the western slopes of the Cubbine Hills . From there it flows northwest to the Northam – York road. This he follows to Northam and crosses under the Great Eastern Highway . West of the city it flows into the Avon River .

history

The river was named after the surveyor Henry Mortlock Ommanney in the 1830s. He was the first European to discover the river on an expedition in 1835.

ecology

The Mortlock River is very salty and provides most of the salt load (approx. 91 tons per year) of the Avon River.
