Axel Hecht

Axel Hecht (born May 31, 1944 in Rokstätt , Posen district , † November 26, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German art journalist. He was editor-in-chief of the Hamburg art magazine art .

Life

Hecht studied German and sociology and then worked as an employee for the daily newspaper Die Welt , the art forum and as an editor for the magazine stern . In 1973, at the age of 29, Henri Nannen made him - so far the youngest - head of the cultural department, which he headed until 1978.

In 1978 he and the former Stern employee Wolf Uecker had the idea for a new art magazine. They submitted their concept to the management of Gruner + Jahr . “To our great astonishment, the board of directors said yes.” The magazine with the title “art” first appeared on October 15, 1979. In the foreword to the zero number, Axel Hecht expected the new magazine to have good chances because it was only available during the In 1978 there would have been around 40 million museum visitors and the 17.8 million exhibition visitors in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. However, the circulation initially fell short of expectations.

"Art" is an illustrated revue - we not only write about art, we also show it. Hecht was the author of numerous articles on modern art and interview partner in the magazine. On January 1, 2005, he handed over the editor-in-chief of the art magazine Art to Tim Sommer , who until then was one of the two deputy editors-in-chief. Axel Hecht remained publisher until 2006. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Kunsthalle Emden .

Hecht had two children from his first marriage. His second marriage was to the journalist Anne Volk .
