Axel Schuster (* 11. February 1976 in East Berlin ) is a former German lightweight - rowers . In 2008 he won the world championship silver with the lightweight eighth .

Athletic career

The 1.83 m tall Axel Schuster rowed for the Tegel Rowing Club in 1886 . In 1995 he finished fourth in the lightweight four without a helmsman at the Nations Cup, a forerunner competition to the U23 World Championships . Two years later, he finished fifth at the 1997 World Championships with the lightweight eighth . In 1998 he started together with Martin Hasse in the lightweight two-man without a helmsman . At the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, the two took third place, at the 1998 World Championships in Cologne, the two achieved sixth place.

Three years later he competed in two with Stefan Locher . At the 2001 World Championships , the two finished eighth. In 2002 the two switched to the lightweight four without a helmsman. Martin Müller-Falcke , Axel Schuster, Stefan Locher and Andreas Bech reached the A final in each of the three World Cup regattas and took fifth place at the World Championships in Seville . A year later, the four Germans reached fourth place at the World Championships in Milan . In 2004 the German four-man with the same line-up took second place at the World Cup opener in Poznan. At the Olympic Games in Athens the crew missed the A-final and finished eleventh in the overall standings.

In 2005, the German lightweight four without a helmsman started with a new line-up. At the World Championships in Gifu occupied Bastian Seibt , Stefan Mlecko , Matthias Veit and Axel Schuster fifth. In 2006 in Eton Seibt, Schuster, Joel El-Qalqili and Mlecko achieved seventh place. In 2007 the German lightweight four missed the Olympic qualification for 2008. At the 2008 World Championships in the non-Olympic boat class, Axel Schuster won his only international medal at the end of his career when he won the silver medal behind the boat from the United States with the lightweight eight. Matthias Veit, Marc Rippel , Johann-Sebastian Diemann , Jonas Schützeberg , Matthias Schömann-Finck , Adrian Bretting , Olaf Beckmann , Axel Schuster and helmsman Martin Sauer were 1.4 seconds behind the winners at the finish.

German championships

Axel Schuster won a total of seven titles at German championships:

  • Lightweight two without a helmsman in 1998 with Martin Hasse and in 2005 and 2006 with Bastian Seibt
  • Lightweight four without a helmsman in 2002, 2003, 2004 with Martin Müller-Falcke, Stefan Locher and Andreas Bech
  • Lightweight eighth in 2002 with Martin Müller-Falcke, Martin Fauck, Christian Dahlke, Martin Raeder, Lars Achtruth, Axel Schuster, Stefan Locher, Andreas Bech and helmsman Jörg Dederding
