Azeitão is a place in Portugal and a municipality in the district ( concelho ) of Setúbal .
history
The word Azeitão comes from azzeittum , Arabic , and refers to the extensive cultivation of olive trees in this region. The first description of the area comes from a document from the Middle Ages by King Dom Pedro I (1320-1367), here the area between the Coina River and the Serra da Arrábida is described. The settlement of this area does not go back to the Stone Age and the Phoenicians , as in other areas of the Sado River ( Tróia and Setúbal) , but can only be proven from the 3rd century BC.
After the first decisions to establish a separate district by splitting off from the Sesimbra district, the Azeitão district was established in 1786 . In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg , the district was dissolved again in 1855 and Setúbal was incorporated.
Sights and gastronomy
Azeitão lies on the foothills of the Serra Arabida . The place is known for the cultivation of good wines and excellent olive oil, as well as its fruit and nut trees. The José Maria da Fonseca winery , which is one of the largest wineries in Portugal today, was founded in Azeitão in 1834. It is largely responsible for the popularity of the Periquita grape variety . Another well-known winery in Azeitão is Quinta da Bacalhoa . Next to it is the Azulejos Manufactory Azulejos de Azeitão .
administration
Azeitão was for a long time divided into the two communities ( freguesias ) São Lourenço (also Vila Nogueira de Azeitão ) and São Simão (also Vila Fresca de Azeitão ). As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal in 2013 , they were combined to form the new municipality of Azeitão. The municipality officially bears the name " União das Freguesias de Azeitão (São Lourenço e São Simão) ". The official seat of the municipality was São Lourenço.
