Béla Simon (table tennis player)

Béla Simon (born April 6, 1920 in Szeged ; † August 20, 1996 in Moers ) was a Hungarian-German table tennis player and trainer.

Career

On his father's side, Simon had German ancestors who had to change their name from Schreiber to Simon in Hungary in the course of the Magyarization . He grew up in Budapest and started playing table tennis there. He played in a team together with Ferenc Sidó and Ferenc Soós under the coach Zoltán Mechlovits , with whom he won the Hungarian championship five times in a row. At the 1950 World Cup he took part in the individual competitions. In the 1950s he became General Secretary of the Hungarian Table Tennis Association .

Because of the Hungarian uprising , he left Hungary with his wife Agnes for the Netherlands in 1956 . Here he worked as a national coach. He later moved to Germany and was a trainer for the German Table Tennis Association DTTB and the West German Table Tennis Association WTTV (1961–1971). Among other things , Wiebke Hendriksen was looked after by him. In addition, he was in charge of the trainer and trainer training at WTTV. In 1971, his successor, Bernie Vossebein , took over this position as association trainer . Béla Simon received German citizenship in November 1966.

After Simon had been importing table tennis items - mainly rackets and rubbers - from Japan since the mid-1960s, he headed the European branch of the Butterfly table tennis company from 1973 to 1985 .

In 1996 Simon died after a long illness.

Private

Béla Simon had a doctorate in law. He was married to the table tennis player Agnes Simon .
