The Böttcherstraße is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 150 meter long Böttcherstraße is located in the northwest of the old town island, in the Marien-Magdalenen quarter . Running approximately in a north-south direction, it connects the Fischergrube with the Beckergrube as a cross street , which it meets across from the Siebenten Querstraße , whereby the Bierspünderstraße initially joins the Böttcherstraße from the east , then from the west the Clemensstraße leading to the Untertrave .

history

The road in 1257 under the will first documented Latin name Prope sanctum Clementem (At St. Clement) after the opportune here Clemens Church . In the following centuries this church was named in all of the variants listed:

  • 1298: Dwerstrate apud sanctum Clementem (cross street near St. Clemens)
  • 1376: Platea sancti Clementis (Street of St. Clement)
  • 1426: Sunte Clementisdwerstrate (Sankt-Clemens-Querstraße)
  • 1459: Clementesstrate
  • 1486: Sunte Clementesstrate

In the 16th century , a change then occurs: The name of the road to the Clemens church gets out of use and is replaced by the designation by the resident, on the nearby Travehafen make coopers . Bodekerdwerstrate (Böttcherquerstraße) was first recorded as a name in 1580 , and in 1598 the name was Bodekerstrate . The high German form Böttcherstraße, which is valid today , has been officially established since 1852.

The northeast side of Böttcherstraße in the vicinity of the confluence with Bierspünderstraße was destroyed in the bombing on March 29, 1942 , which left a noticeable gap of 40 meters in the development that still exists today. Apart from that, the street shows a largely closed picture of historical buildings from several centuries.
