The bunch top disease of the banana ( Bunchy-top disease , abbreviated BBTV or Musa virus 1 ) is a viral disease of the dessert banana . The virus belongs to the family of the Nanoviridae and has an icosahedral (twenty surface ) capsid with a diameter of 18-20 nm. The genome consists of at least six circular (+) ssDNA sections. BBTV is transmitted by the aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa . The control succeeds through the use of virus-free seedlings and the immediate destruction of diseased plants. In addition, the vectors can be combated.
Clump top disease occurs in Asia, Africa and Oceania and is one of the most economically damaging banana diseases there. In the 1920s, they wiped out the Australian banana industry.
