Origin and meaning

Béla is a Hungarian male name. The origin of the name is uncertain, according to the most likely explanation it comes from the old Hungarian personal name Bél, with the A here being a diminutive. The meaning of Bél is "inner part", e.g. B. "Heart". The name became modern again in Hungary in the 19th century; it used to appear in the names of the kings of the Árpád family.

Since it appeared in Hungarian as the name of the ruler, the Hungarian name Béla comes from another explanation of the Turkish name Bojla, which was common as the name of dignitaries in the early medieval Eurasian steppe.
