Compressed food bars or compressed carbohydrate bars (English: " Compressed Food Bars" ) denote a form of directly edible food products that are characterized by a long shelf life , high nutritional value and comparatively small volume . For these reasons, they are used by aid organizations to cope with famine and similar disasters (see special foods for nutritional aid ), as part of survival rations in the military sector , in research expeditions and by private individuals in the field of outdoor tourism .

Composition and use

In contrast to high-energy biscuits, these products are not baked goods, but food mixes in compressed, dry and firm bars. These can be consumed immediately without preparation or alternatively made into a porridge with hot or cold water or milk . The taste is slightly sweet. The shelf life in the vacuum-packed state is specified as at least five years, but is usually more than ten years, depending on the storage conditions.

Well-known products are e.g. B. BP-5 and BP-WR (manufacturer of both products: GC Rieber Compact AS in Norway ) and NRG-5 (company MSI GmbH from Friedrichsdorf in Hesse ).

The ingredients consist of roasted wheat flour (with 50–60 percent main ingredient), palm oil , glucose , sugar , barley malt , glucose syrup and potassium chloride , stabilizer E451i , anti- caking agent E341iii, and the antioxidants E304 and E306 (vitamin E). BP-5 is also enriched with protein concentrate from soy to a protein content of 14.7% as well as vitamins and minerals . BP-WR has a lower protein content (8%) and there is no vitamin enrichment; Instead, the fat content was increased, milk protein was added, some of the palm oil was replaced by rapeseed oil with cheaper unsaturated fatty acids, and some of the wheat was replaced by oat flakes . The products do not contain genetically modified ingredients or lactose and can be used for the nutrition of adults, children and adolescents as well as small children from the age of 6 months. BP-5 and NRG-5 do not contain any ingredients of animal origin.

The energy content of BP-5 is around 1067 kilojoules / 255 kilocalories per bar (corresponding to 19,200 kilojoules / 4580 kilocalories per kilogram); with BP-WR slightly different around 1132 kilojoules / 270 kilocalories per bar (corresponding to 20,370 kilojoules / 4864 kilocalories per kilogram). The content of carbohydrates , fats and proteins in BP-5 is 61.5, 17.0 and 14.7 percent; for BP-WR at 60.9, 22.8 and 8 percent.

In the case of the BP-5 and BP-WR, nine bars, each made up of two blocks, are simply packed in paper and welded together in a 500-gram pack under a high vacuum to make them watertight and airtight with a 3-layer film. The packaging is impermeable to oxygen and guarantees durability even under extreme climatic conditions in crisis situations. A 500-gram pack is sufficient for the daily requirement of an adult. In emergency situations, half a pack (250 g) per day can be used to ensure survival.

The price for 500 g BP-5 is around 1.50 euros when given to aid organizations. BP-5 is not available to private individuals in Germany; 500 g NRG-5 and BP-WR cost from around six euros in Germany (2017).

The product "NRG-5" is almost identical to BP-5 in terms of ingredients and energy content, but differs in taste and packaging. The manufacturer guarantees a shelf life of 20 years for NRG-5.

BP-WR contains milk protein and may therefore be rejected as a food by strict vegans .
