Babette Cole

Babette Cole (born September 10, 1950 in Jersey - † January 15, 2017 ) was a British children's author and illustrator .

life and work

After studying art at Canterbury College of Art in Kent , she worked for the BBC from 1973 . She drew for various series in the children's television program. There she was responsible for television series such as Bagpuss and Jackonary. She published her first book in 1976. Unlike many other picture book illustrators, she wrote her own stories.

In her picture books, Cole deals with topics such as enlightenment, divorce, fears and the meaning of life in a child-friendly and humorous way with often crazy-looking images and texts. Her illustrations are characterized by restrained coloring and wit. She has published more than seventy books.

Cole lived near Crediton in Devon , England . She died on January 15, 2017 at the age of 66.
