Axien brick church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The brick church Axien was built around 1170 during the Christianization of this region. In addition to the Pötnitzer Church , it is one of the southernmost buildings of Romanesque brick architecture in Saxony-Anhalt. The oldest surviving frescoes in the choir are dated to the year 1235 . Also because of these murals, the listed building is named as one of the most valuable churches in terms of cultural history in Central Germany .

description

The late Romanesque brick building is characterized by a flat-roofed nave, the groin-vaulted choir , the apse and the west transverse tower, which was enlarged around 1675. The sound openings in the bell storey of the tower, designed as round arches, probably date from the late Gothic period.

Cross-arch friezes can be found on the choir, apse and nave . The original windows of the apse have been preserved. The remaining openings in the sacred building were expanded during the baroque redesign around 1680. The choir on the north side was also supplemented by a sacristy. The nave and the choir are separated from each other by a pointed triumphal arch . The wall paintings in the chancel and apse date from around 1235. They were discovered in 1908, partially exposed in 1914 and made fully visible again during a restoration between 1999 and 2000.

The altar crucifix dates from the 17th century. The pulpit that exists today was built in 1822 during a renovation project. The cylindrical baptismal font with chalice dates from 1591 and is decorated with plants. Grave monuments from the 18th century and an original atonement cross from 1560 can be found on the outside walls of the church.

The Lebien branch church and the then independent town Kähnitzsch belonged to the Parochie Axien .
