The Badener Mühlbach (also just Mühlbach ) is derived from the Schwechat in Helenental through Baden (Holzrechenplatz - Wehr, west of the crossing of the 1st Viennese high spring water pipeline ) and is likely to be a partly dug, partly natural channel.

history

In the Middle Ages , the Mühlbach was used as a water barrier to protect cities and castles (the two districts of Baden, Weikersdorf and Leesdorf , Tribuswinkel and Traiskirchen ). The age of the Mühlbach is about 900 years, it is 13.2 km long and flows into the Heidbach (also called Haidbach) in Guntramsdorf, Am Tabor . In Laxenburg it branches into several arms and flows through the western part of the Laxenburg Palace Park . In the north-east corner of the park, the Lobenbach leads all park drains to Schwechat in Achau.

The Mühlbach once operated 33 mills. The mills required an even amount of water to operate and a facility for regulation. A river like the Schwechat with regular flooding was not suitable for this; mill buildings on the Schwechat would also have been endangered. Therefore the Mühlbach was of great importance for the economic development of this region, which is passed down in many documents and stories. The maintenance of the Mühlbach, the preservation and bank design appear in many documents and so many disputes.

The Badener Mühlbach is looked after by the "Wassergenossenschaft an der Schwechat and Badener Mühlbach". Today the Doblhoffteich, the (former) Semperit , the iron foundry Möllersdorf (now: EGM-Industrieguss GmbH) and the Assmannmühle in Guntramsdorf are supplied with water by the Mühlbach.

In 1890, opposite the entrance to the trotting area, in the area of today's Mühlgasse 102 and Josef-Kollmann-Straße 60, the rogue mill powered by the water power of the Mühlbach was demolished. A family pool, fed by the Mühlbach, with a café and restaurant was privately built on this area in 1923, three years before the opening of the Baden thermal baths . The open-air swimming pool Badener Gänsehäufl , opened in 1924, bought by the city of Baden at auction in 1926 and subsequently taken over, was preserved for many years

At least since the beginning of the 19th century, the maintenance of the flume, which was particularly required by the mill operators, but also by the population, was carried out in the city of Baden as a "Mühlbachabkehr". This was connected with the drainage of the water controlled by a weir system. Exact dates for clearing the various stream sections have been set for this. Since the stream is also often used for garbage disposal, a lot of sludge and debris accumulates, which four workers removed within two weeks.

In 2003 the Mühlbach departure was declared closed. - Since 2009 at the latest, however, Mühlbach turns have taken place again. In the course of the completion of the creek bed, which has been reopened to around 30 m on Baden's Josefsplatz since June 2013, the turnaround in the second half of July 2013 was used for bricklaying and paving work due to the associated low water level .

Remarks

  1. View from the crown of the Baden aqueduct to the area of the wooden computer area ( camera position ), which was formerly surrounded by the Schwechat . The arm of the river, which is open in the center of the picture, was drained after 1970 and applanated at street level. Since then, the one-support bridge corresponds to the access to the forester's house on the former river island (today: Holzrechenplatz 1). The villa located to the right of the bridge in the picture is located on the property at Helenenstrasse 56. Also to be seen in the photo: the top left of the picture, the spire of the Weilburg chapel , consecrated in 1858 , and, immediately to the right of it, the summer residence built in 1886 for Archduke Wilhelm ( from 1895: Eugen Villa ).
