The vehicles of type III c , from 1868 type IIb old , of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railroad were Baden steam locomotives with a 1A1 wheel arrangement.

After the positive experience with the vehicles of classes III a and III b , further vehicles of the same type were ordered. They were to be used on the Karlsruhe – Heidelberg route, where they were supposed to reach a speed of 37 km / h with a 120 t train. To achieve this, the boiler was enlarged again. Since the standing kettle was painted black, it was given the name "Schwarzkopf". The boiler position has also been increased to 1,854 mm.

The machine " ZÄHRINGEN" was intended for the opening train on July 30, 1845 to Freiburg station . That is why the boiler was clad with mahogany slats, the frame and tender were painted green, and other parts were bare or with special decorations.

Like their predecessors, the locomotives impressed with their good steam generation. For a long time they were the most powerful locomotives in the fleet and were only used on the Rhine Valley route. In 1854, the locomotives were converted to standard gauge, with the nameplates of six locomotives being swapped.

The support frame consisted of two feed frames and the machine frame of two plate frames. The kettle was a Sharp kettle copied by Kessler. The two-cylinder wet steam engine was internal. The locomotives were equipped with Kessler 3 T 5.4 tenders.
