Bahawalpur ( urdu بہاولپور, also Bhawalpur ) is a city in the south of the Pakistani province of Punjab . It is located on the northern edge of the Cholistan desert , a few kilometers south of the Satluj River and around 60 kilometers east of its confluence with the Chanab to Panjnad . With a population of 762,111 (as of 2017 census), it is the eleventh largest city in Pakistan.

The Nur Mahal Palace, built in the late 19th century, was at times the residence of the Nawabs of Bahawalpur.

history

Bahawalpur was founded in 1748 by Nawab Muhammad Bahawal Khan I , a governor of the Mughal Empire , and named after him. Since the family traced its origins back to the Abbasids , the city also became Baghdād al-Jadīd (بغداد الجديد'New Baghdad'). Until it was incorporated into Pakistan in 1947, it was the capital of the princely state of Bahawalpur . Bahawalpur has been part of the Punjab Province since 1955. A large number of important architectural monuments have been preserved from the time of the Nawabs, including the former ruler's seat Nur Mahal , the central library, the six-gate city wall and several mausoleums.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is now an important regional trading center for agricultural and textile products. Cotton and silk fabrics, shoes, ceramics, carpets, embroidery and soap are sometimes still made by hand. There are also several presses for cottonseed oil . Bahawalpur has a railway connection and a domestic airport. Since 1975 it has also been the seat of a university ( Islamia University of Bahawalpur ).

The Quaid-e-Azam solar park is being built near the city and will be completed in 2016 when it is fully expanded to achieve a capacity of 1000 MW. In all probability, this will make it the most powerful solar park in the world.
