Eschweiler-Aue station with routes around 1910

The Eschweiler-Aue train station is a train station in the southern Aue district of Eschweiler in the Aachen city region . It is located on Phönixstraße across from the confluence with Auestraße.

history

On October 1, 1873, the station was the terminus of the new Mönchengladbach – Stolberg railway (also known locally as the valley railway line) from Odenkirchen via Hochneukirch and Jülich to Eschweiler-Aue with a total length of 48.77 km by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft ( BME) opened. The station had extensive track systems with sidings to serve the local industrial companies (rolling and tube works of the Eschweiler Bergwerk-Verein , Concordia hut and various mines in the Indereviers ). The station was necessary both for the extensive freight traffic and for the equally extensive worker traffic of the factories and pits.

Since mainly the connections of the industrial companies converged at the station, the loading of goods in the station itself did not take place on a large scale, so that the small, still existing goods shed was sufficient.

In 1875 the line from today's Stolberger Hbf to Aue was opened by the Aachener Industriebahn (AI) , so that the line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft got a connection to the main line Cologne – Aachen . The goods shed on the north side of the reception building was added in 1880. In 1882 the BME was taken over by the Prussian State Railways , and in 1884 the short section of the Aachen industrial railway between Aue and Stolberg.

The connection to the pipe works led via the station forecourt, so that the station building was located on an island.

Due to the course of the front line of the Second World War , rail traffic at Eschweiler-Aue station was discontinued in autumn 1944. Operations resumed on March 4, 1945.

On May 30, 1981, the station together with the Eschweiler-Röhe stop was closed to passenger traffic, and the trains have since passed through Aue without stopping. In 1983, passenger traffic on the valley railway was completely discontinued, the line and the Aue station continued to be used for freight traffic. The ESW pipe works remained as a freight customer, as well as a recycling center until its closure in March 2016 . The station buildings are used elsewhere today; the south wing of the station was demolished in the 1980s after a fire. It is the last train station in the Eschweiler city area that is served by DB Cargo Germany . In 2004 passenger traffic on the line was resumed, but the trains do not stop in Eschweiler-Aue.

Current situation

Since January 2019, primary products for the ESW pipe works in the Eschweiler-Aue station have been reloaded from Italy and Croatia, which were previously transshipped in the freight yard area of the Stolberg main station on Haldenstrasse (Atsch) and delivered to the pipe works by truck. For this purpose, the EVS Euregio Verkehrsschienennetz had a large loading area created in the station.

The Aue station currently has six tracks:

  • Track 1, continuous main track
  • Track 2, passing track, usable length 300 m
  • Track 3, siding, usable length 200 m
  • Track 4, siding, usable length 250 m
  • Track 5, siding, usable length 177 m
  • Track 6, siding, usable length 170 m

and two siding:

  • ESW Röhrenwerke: Connection points 07W05 and 07W09
  • Hoffmann: Connection switch 07W05

Planned reactivation in passenger traffic

Originally, Aue station was to be reactivated as Eschweiler-Aue stop as early as September 2004 as part of the reactivation of the valley railway for passenger traffic by the Euregiobahn , but this was postponed due to a lack of funds despite public protests. Current plans envisage that the breakpoint will be built with the electrification of the valley railway in 2024 at the earliest.
