The Freiberg (Neckar) station (until May 31, 1975 Beihingen-Heutingsheim ) is located on the 19.4 kilometer of the Backnang – Ludwigsburg line and is a station on the Stuttgart S-Bahn . Up until the end of the Second World War , a line branched off to Bietigheim (formal closure on January 15, 1958).

history

Planning and construction

For transit traffic from Bavaria to Baden , the Royal Württemberg State Railroad planned a branch of the Murrthalbahn from Backnang to Bietigheim, the starting point of the Western Railway, from the mid-1860s . It should lead via Kirchberg , Steinheim , Pleidelsheim and Großingersheim .

After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the railway management changed these plans. For now, among other things, the Reich Railway Authority in Berlin saw the military-strategic benefit of this east-west connection. It was considered the fastest route for military trains that were to carry the troops stationed in Middle Franconia to the French border. So far, it was envisaged that all trains in Bietigheim head making , would have what would have led to a time delay. In order to avoid this, a decision was made in favor of a southerly variant, which reached Bietigheim station from the south-east. From March 23, 1873 it was finally certain that the village of Beihingen am Neckar would receive a station. At a later point in time, a branch to Ludwigsburg should be built here .

State Railroad Time

On December 8, 1879, the state railway began operating on the Backnang –Bietigheim line and opened the Beihingen station . The reception building at that time still exists. The ground floor is made of sandstone , the upper floor and the knee floor are made of brick .

The goods shed to the east of the reception building has also been preserved. In addition to agricultural products - mainly sugar beets - gravel from the Neckar was also loaded here as building material.

On August 25, 1879, the state parliament approved the construction of the branching line to Ludwigsburg. Its commissioning on October 15, 1881 made Beihingen a railway junction, albeit of minor importance. Beihingen was also suggested as a possible starting point for the Bottwartalbahn , but the experts ultimately decided in favor of Marbach .

In the 19th century, the state railway renamed the station in Beihingen-Heutingsheim . At that time, life in the two villages gradually changed. The citizens who previously worked in agriculture or a handicraft looked for new jobs in factories outside of Germany. A cable car built in 1905 , which carried the stones from the Neckar to the station, contributed to the economic improvement of gravel loading . In 1922 it was shut down again.

Beihingen-Heutingsheim during the Second World War

After the outbreak of war on September 1, 1939, the importance of the Backnang – Bietigheim route for troop transports between the fronts increased again. The station, the line and nearby trains were the target of Allied air raids from 1944 onwards.

When a low -flying aircraft bombed a freight train traveling in the direction of Bietigheim, the Deutsche Reichsbahn stopped train services between Beihingen-Heutingsheim and Bietigheim. On April 20, 1945, retreating Wehrmacht units blew up all railway bridges in the area.

Federal Railroad Time

Since the flow of commuters was oriented towards Ludwigsburg, the reconstruction of the Beihingen-Heutingsheim-Bietigheim section was not carried out after the war. The German Federal Railroad officially shut it down on January 15, 1958.

On January 1, 1972, the communities of Beihingen am Neckar, Heutingsheim and Geisingen am Neckar merged to form Freiberg am Neckar. The Bundesbahn left the station name Beihingen-Heutingsheim for the time being, but changed it to Freiberg (Neckar) on June 1, 1975.

For the future S-Bahn traffic between Ludwigsburg and Marbach, the Federal Railroad modernized the section of the route. In addition to the electrification, it laid a second track between the Favoritepark and Freiberg . On September 28, 1980, the S4 S-Bahn began operations.

Rail operations

The station is served by the S4 line of the Stuttgart S-Bahn. Track 1, on the former house platform, is no longer used. The S-Bahn in the direction of Ludwigsburg stop on track 2, and on track 3 in the direction of Marbach.

The Freiberg (Neckar) Bahnhof corresponds, according to the Deutsche Bahn AG of Bahnhof Category fifth
