Site plan of the Großkarlbach station from 1889

The Großkarlbach train station was the train station for the Rhineland-Palatinate community of Großkarlbach . It was in operation from 1891 as the terminus of the meter-gauge Frankenthal – Großkarlbach local railway . When it was shut down in 1939, it was taken out of service. Its former station building is a listed building .

location

The station was located in the northeast of today's settlement area of the local community Großkarlbach on Landesstrasse 455 , which in this area is identical to the local main road . Immediately to the north is a vineyard .

history

At the end of the 1880s , plans arose to build a narrow-gauge railway network in the Ludwigshafen catchment area . One of the purposes of these routes was to bring commuters from the surrounding areas to BASF . One route from Frankenthal was supposed to open up the communities west of the city. To the west of Dirmstein , however, the course was not certain from the start. One variant provided for a connection from Obersülzen , another, however, that of Großkarlbach. A connection to Grünstadt was envisaged. The Großkarlbach variant finally prevailed, so that the route was opened on July 1, 1891; the connection to Grünstadt no longer came about.

In 1922 the station was incorporated into the newly established Ludwigshafen Reich Railway Directorate . In the course of the dissolution of the Ludwigshafen management, he changed to the area of responsibility of the Mainz management on April 1, 1937. In May 1939, the line was shut down and finally dismantled and the station was taken out of service.

Buildings

Reception building

The reception building with attached goods shed is a late historical building made of brick , stylistically assigned to the neo-renaissance . It is identical to the buildings in Dirmstein and Dannstadt . It was built in 1890 and is a listed building .

Engine shed

For its function as a terminus, the station also received a two-tier locomotive shed . It also contained a water reservoir and a coal dump .

Other equipment

The station's additional equipment also included an economic building ( stable , toilet and laundry room ), which was identical to its counterparts in Dirmstein and Heuchelheim. It was demolished in the 1960s .
