Kensington (Olympia) Train Station
Kensington (Olympia) is a train station in western London , which, unlike stations like South Kensington, not only serves the London Underground , but also the London Overground and the Southern .
The facility is located in the Travelcard tariff zone 2, on the West London Line , which bypasses the city center. Since the route follows the border between two boroughs, the eastern platform is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea , the western in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham . In 2014, 1.95 million underground passengers used the station, plus 7.249 million rail passengers.
London Overground operates between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction (during rush hour on the North London Line to Stratford ), the company Southern operates trains from Milton Keynes to Croydon . Kensington (Olympia) is the terminus of a short shuttle train connection of the District Line via Earl's Court to High Street Kensington (currently only on weekends and during trade fair events).

The West London Joint Railway opened the Kensington station south of Hammersmith Road in May 1844 , but closed it again after six months. On June 2, 1862, passenger traffic was resumed, with Addison Road station at its present location north of Hammersmith Road. From 1864 trains of the Metropolitan Railway also operated on the so-called Outer Circle ( Paddington - Latimer Road - South Kensington - Paddington), followed in 1872 by the Metropolitan District Railway . Trains on the London and South Western Railway stopped here from 1869 to 1916.
On October 2, 1940, the Addison Road station had to be closed due to the war. From December 20, 1946, a subway shuttle train operated by the District Line on the section to Earl's Court, at the same time the station was given its current name. A rail shuttle train also ran for the first time during rush hour to Clapham Junction, which was mainly used by the employees of the nearby headquarters of the British Postal Office Savings Bank.
From 1979 to 2008, individual express trains stopped daily in Kensington (Olympia) on the way from Birmingham to Brighton , in the meantime also trains to Eastbourne , Folkestone and Ramsgate . After a break of 54 years, rail traffic between Willesden Junction and Clapham Common was resumed in 1994. From 1994 to 2007, Kensington (Olympia) served as an alternate station for Eurostar trains when they could not reach the actual terminus at Waterloo International .
