Location of Billig in Euskirchen
|
Cheap is a district of Euskirchen with almost 500 inhabitants and is located in the south of the city. To the south-west is the cheap forest with the highest elevation in the Euskirchen city area.
history
The only district of Euskirchen that dates back to antiquity is cheap , and besides Zülpich it is even the only one in the entire Euskirchen district . The place name is of Celtic origin and is derived from Belgica . In Roman times , Belgica vicus was a street settlement at an intersection of the Roman road network.
Cheap belonged to the mayor's office of Euskirchen until 1856, after which it came to the mayor's office in Wachendorf and in 1948 to the office of Satzvey-Wachendorf-Enzen. On July 1, 1969, Billig was incorporated into Euskirchen.
In the cheap forest there is a settlement of the same name, which was founded in 1949 by farming families who settled there. Today descendants of the original settler families still live and work there.
Street names
Historically guaranteed street names are e.g. B .:
- Bunggasse (named after the Bung family)
- Cyriakusstraße (named after the village church St. Cyriakus )
- Mandtgasse (named after the Mandt family)
- Ringelstraße (named after the traditional location name "Auf dem Ringel")
- Römerkastellstrasse (named after the location of a former Roman fort )
- Steinfrössel (named after the same tub name)
- Veynauer Weg (named after Veynau Castle )
military
In the cheap forest there is a site training area and a site shooting range for the Bundeswehr.
Parts of the forest were cleared and reclaimed from 1949 to 1950 by the five farming families who had settled there. The first houses were built in 1949 by the "Rheinisches Heim" settlement company at the time . In 1960 the settler sites were sold to the families who had since settled there. Today this settlement is called Billiger Wald, in which the descendants of the settler families of that time live. This settlement is not assigned to the village of Billig, but Euenheim. In addition, a military facility ( Nike position ) was built there, in which nuclear warheads were stored. The Belgian military was stationed in the outer ring of this facility, the American one in the inner ring. The Belgian military stored ammunition and operated a radar station at another location in the cheap forest. In the early 1980s, the Belgian military gave up these properties. There are no more weapons systems in the former missile station. The area and the buildings are used by the Bundeswehr , the THW and the fire brigade for exercises.
