The Kulmbach train station is not far from the old town of Kulmbach on Heinrich-von-Stefan-Straße. The building complex of the former Kulmbach spinning mill and the city center are located south of the track system . In the north, the Bergophor building is directly connected to platform 4. The Kulmbach freight yard, located to the west of the passenger station, is no longer in operation.

Infrastructure

The station building is located south of the track system. In the building there is a waiting room with seating and a ticket machine, a magazine shop, a travel agency, a bar, a nail care studio, an insurance branch and private apartments.

Platforms

The Kulmbach station has four platform tracks. Platform 1 is the house platform, located directly at the reception building. There is a toilet facility at the western end of the platform. Most of the platform is covered. From platform 1, an underpass leads to the other platforms.

The platform with platform tracks two and three is designed as a central platform and can only be reached through the underpass. The middle part with staircases and stairs and some seating is covered. There are also additional benches with weather protection at the ends of the platform. This platform is used almost exclusively for passenger train operations.

Demands for renovation

For several years now, the city of Kulmbach has asked Deutsche Bahn as well as the federal and state governments to renovate the station facilities. In addition to the completely inadequate accessibility, the dilapidated condition of the reception building and the railway systems are also criticized. In addition, there is the widely complained odor nuisance in the underpasses. An offer from the city of Kulmbach to buy the station and renovate it itself was just as unaccepted as the signaling effect of structural improvements that the city carried out within the scope of its possibilities was not recognized. The governments say that the station is too small and, with a passenger volume of 1700 people per day, too insignificant for renovation in the near future. They point to possible possibilities for future funding programs. The fact that many train stations are currently being refurbished, especially in the immediate vicinity, makes this stagnation all the more unsatisfactory, especially since the immediate vicinity of the train station will be considerably upgraded in the near future through the refurbishment and revitalization of the former Kulmbach spinning mill, the new building of a faculty at the University of Bayreuth and other construction activities will be.
