The Montreux train station is the largest train station in the municipality of the Swiss city of Montreux . The long-distance and regional train station is served by almost all trains on the Simplon line of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and is also the starting point for the Montreux – Zweisimmen ( Golden Pass ) railway and on the Rochers de Naye .

history

The station was opened in 1861 when the then Jura-Simplon Railway (JS) opened the Lausanne - Villeneuve section of the railway line to Sion .

In 1901, the section between Montreux and the higher district of Les Avants of the Montreux – Bernese Oberland Railway (MOB) followed, which was continued in 1903 to Montbovon .

In 1909 the railway line between Montreux and Glion of today's Transports Montreux-Vevey-Riviera (MVR) was opened as a continuation of the rack railway between Glion and Rochers-de-Naye, which had existed since 1892.

location

The station is on a hillside above the lake shore, access to the main street Grand Rue is guaranteed by escalators, lifts and stairs. Rue de la Gare is responsible for access from the old town - located on the other side of the railway lines than the lake shore .

investment

The station system is a rarity in several respects: On the one hand, Montreux is the only station in Switzerland where three different gauges still meet today: the standard gauge (1435 mm) of the Swiss Federal Railways, the meter gauge (1000 mm) of the Montreux – Bernese Oberland -Bahn and the narrow gauge (800 mm) of the Montreux – Vevey – Riviera transport.

On the other hand, the entrance from the reception building to the house platform is not on the ground floor. Due to the city's hillside location, it is on the second floor, while the service facilities are on the ground floor and the access to the underpass is on the first floor. In addition, track 2 is missing. This was a passing track without a platform edge. In 2006, when the platforms were raised to 55 cm, it was given a platform edge and renamed Track 1 - the previous track 1 was removed.

The Swiss Federal Railways has the main platform with track 1 and track 3, which is located on the middle platform together with tracks 4 (eastern half) and 5 (western half) of the Montreux – Bernese Oberland Railway. The short track 4 partially separates the middle platform. Tracks 6, 7 and 8 are located on another central platform, which is also divided like a fork by track 7. Platform 8 of the Montreux – Vevey – Riviera transports is also located under a hotel and the headquarters of the GoldenPass Group, the GoldenPass Center . While tracks 4 and 7 are used for regional traffic to and from Fontanivent , Sonzier and Les Avants , trains to and from Zweisimmen run from tracks 5 and 6 .
