The Rimini railway station is the main station of the Italian city of Rimini , located on the Bologna-Ancona railway , also opening out here range from Ferrara in the main line. The station is owned by the Italian infrastructure company RFI , but was managed from 2001 to 2018 by Centostazioni , the FS subsidiary then responsible for 103 medium-sized Italian stations .

history

old trainstation

The station was opened on October 4, 1861 in the presence of Prince Umberto of Savoy, later Umberto I , when the Forli –Rimini section of today's route from Bologna was opened to traffic. On November 17, 1861, the station became a transit station when the line to Ancona was completed. The simple reception building could no longer withstand the increasing number of passengers after the opening of the line from Ferrara in 1889, so plans for a larger building were forged.

Today's train station

The train station, which still exists today, was designed by the architect Ulisse Dini and was completed in 1914. The new station is located south of the (now repealed) locomotive shed, while the first station was north of it. During the First World War , the station was the target of troops from Austria-Hungary. After four years of construction, the cross-border narrow-gauge railway to San Marino was opened to traffic in 1932 , starting at the Rimini station. During the Second World War, like the Rimini train station, it was bombed over 400 times. While the damage to the station was being repaired, the railway line to San Marino was discontinued and most of it was dismantled. Another narrow-gauge railway to Novafeltria was in operation between 1916 and 1960 .

traffic

The train station is an important transport hub and also plays a major role in tourism. Not only Rimini is opened up, the seaside resorts connected to regional transport lines such as Viserba , Gatteo a Mare , Cesenatico or Bellaria are also connected to the national long-distance transport network via Rimini. A total of around five million passengers are handled annually in trains on the 7 platform tracks.

From Rimini, cities like Milan , Rome , Ravenna , Pescara , Bologna , Foggia , Bari or Lecce can be reached without changing trains.
