The Saalburg (Taunus) station ( called Saalburg / Lochmühle in the timetable from 1993 to 2008 , since then only Saalburg ) is a station of the Taunusbahn in the area of Köppern in the Köpperner Tal . It opens up the Saalburgsiedlung residential area in Wehrheim , the Lochmühle amusement park and is the closest railway station to the Saalburg Roman fort . From 1900 to 1935 this was also directly connected to Bad Homburg by the electric Saalburgbahn , today city bus line 5. In the station area, the railway line crosses the course of the Roman Limes .

history

The station was the youngest on the railway line Homburg vor der Höhe - Usingen, opened in 1895 . On the occasion of the opening of the rebuilt Roman fort Saalburg by Kaiser Wilhelm II on October 10, 1900, the station was also put into operation at a distance of 7.0 kilometers. In addition to promoting tourism , the construction project also aimed to remove the quartzite that was mined nearby . This gravel transport by rail was discontinued in 1996. Between 1983 and 1992, after the interlocking and signals were dismantled and the eastern track changeover a little later , the station was operationally just a stop , but unlike Neu-Anspach, for example , the second track and the western switch were not dismantled due to freight traffic . When the Taunusbahn was modernized in 1992, the station received two outer platforms, new signaling technology and another track change to the east of the level crossing .

building

The former station building is built in the style of a picturesque garden house. The partially basement building consists of three building wings , a main wing running parallel to the railway line and two side wings of different lengths on the platform side . It is created in view of the framework . A separate toilet used to belong to the ensemble. The former reception building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act and is now used as a restaurant .

Railway systems

It is a double-track station with outside platforms at an entry height of 96 cm. The station is fully signaled with H / V light signals in a compact design. Before the second track in the direction of Köpperner meets the line again behind the level crossing, the connection to the quartzite plant , secured with a track barrier , branches off , which today ends in green vegetation after a few meters. The track was laid at this height as part of the modernization in 1992 in order to increase the curve radius and thus improve the route.

traffic

The Taunusbahn stops in Saalburg station every half hour in each direction on weekdays until Saturday noon , otherwise every hour. On weekdays in the mornings and afternoons, through trains to and from Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof run as cycle compressors and cross here with the other trains . In the bus service, the station is approached by individual trips on lines 59 and 64, as well as on line 63 for school trips .
