The Treffurt station is the former station of the city of Treffurt in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . The former separation station is located south of the old town of Treffurt on the former Schwebda – Wartha railway line and was the starting point for the Treffurt – Mühlhausen railway line .

history

On May 1, 1902, the Schwebda –Treffurt section of the Schwebda – Wartha railway line was ceremoniously opened, creating a continuous railway connection from Treffurt via Wanfried to Eschwege . By 1907, the line from Treffurt was extended in an easterly direction via Falken , Mihla and Creuzburg to Wartha , where it was connected to the Thuringian Railway in the Bebra - Eisenach section at Wartha (Werra) station .

On April 1, 1911, the Mühlhausen – Treffurt railway was opened, connecting the city with Heyerode and Mühlhausen / Thuringia in the northeast.

Rail operations in Treffurt came to an abrupt end during the Second World War . Due to the advancing American troops retreating Wehrmacht blew up on April 1, 1945 between hawks and Mihla several bridges of the railway line on the Werra , so that a railway from Treffurt towards Mihla / Eisenach on this day was no longer possible; the bridges were not rebuilt. The connection to Schwebda was interrupted because of the border of the Soviet and American occupation zones between Treffurt and Heldra and the beginning of the closure of the inner-German border ; traffic was stopped on July 3, 1945.

In 1952, as this line ran a bit over Hessian territory west of Treffurt, the railway line in the direction of Mühlhausen was shut down and the railway operations at the Treffurt station were completely stopped. Immediately afterwards the track system was dismantled; the high-rise buildings of the station were used for other purposes. On the former track field behind the station building, residential buildings and, in the 2000s, a grocery store were built.

building

In addition to the station building, the station area included a small railway depot, which had a water tower, a locomotive shed and, in front of it, a turntable.

The former station building is now a listed building. It houses apartments and smaller retail establishments, including a shoe store.

After the cessation of railway operations and the dismantling of the track systems, the locomotive shed housed a branch of VEB Kraftverkehr Eisenach and served as a storage hall for buses.

The water tower, protected as a technical monument, is now privately owned and serves as an apartment. In 2004, the owner received the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize for its renovation .
