The Tuvan Railway ( Russian Железнодорожная линия Кызыл - Курагино , English Kyzyl-Kuragino Railway, KKR ) is a planned 411.7 km long single-track, non-electrified railway with mountain railway character between Kuragino at the South Siberian Railway and Kyzyl in the Republic Tuva should run. The railway line serves to develop the Elegest mine in the Ulug-Chemski district , which is one of the largest coal mines in the world and is said to contain around 900 million tons of high-quality hard coal suitable for coking . The Russian Defense Minister Shoigu suggested extending the route through western Mongolia to Urumchi in China , Pakistan and India .

history

A first project for the railway line was approved in March 2007. The line was to be built in a public-private partnership with half of the financing from the Russian state and the Yenisei Industrial Company ( Енисейская промышленная компания , abbreviated ЕПК ) under the control of the then Senator of the Republic of Tuva, Sergey Sergei, to operate the Elegest mine . In the summer of 2011, rescue excavations began in archaeological sites along the future railway line, where the graves of former Scythian princes are located near Arshan . The construction of the line began in December 2011, but was already in 2012 reinstated after the finance company Yenisei Industrial Company did not comply with their obligations, the Russian State blocked its part of the financing and the Yenisei Industrial Company , the mining permission was withdrawn for Elegest pit. The state funds that had already been reserved were then used to expand the Mezhduretschensk - Abakan - Taischet line of the South Siberian Railway.

From the Kyzyl – Kuragino railway line, only 1000 m of track were laid in the Kyzyl freight yard and some earthworks were carried out in the short construction period . The building material was transported from a logistics base in Minusinsk with trucks over the M-54 highway to Kyzyl. In February 2013 the building installations had already been removed. World icon

In 2013 the project of a railway line Elegest – Kyzyl – Kuragino was relaunched, with the names of some stations and passing points being changed. In April of the same year, the mining license at the Elegest mine went to Tuva Energy Industrial Corporation ( Тувинская энергетическая промышленная корпорация , abbreviated ТЕПК ), which is controlled by the Chechen Ruslan Baud . Baisarov was previously a partner in the EPC , but got out there in August 2012. In May, the overall project management during the planning and construction phase was transferred to the Swiss engineering office Swiss Railway Engineering (SRE) .

The construction of the railway line was awarded to the company SGC-transstroyYamal (SGC- трансстройЯмал ) in April 2014 . Construction work should have started in the second quarter of 2014 so that the line would be operational in the first quarter of 2018. So far, however, there is no evidence that construction activity has actually resumed. The construction costs are expected to be around 2 billion euros (as of April 2014).

route

The route should have seven stations and twelve passing points. Many engineering structures are necessary for the route, including 127 bridges and 8 tunnels. In addition, culverts with a total length of almost 16 km must be built and 107 million cubic meters of earth moved. The route partly leads through the Ergaki Nature Park . The route leads through pathless terrain that was only accessible with the help of horses and caterpillars during the survey.

Route

The route leaves Kuragino station at 300 m above sea level in an easterly direction, turns in a narrow arc to the south to follow the right bank of the Tuba River . This is crossed with a bridge at Bugurtak ( Бугуртак ) , where the route turns in an arc to the west, after Udschei ( Уджей ) the route runs south again, crosses the Amyl river and follows it on the right bank for about 45 km . Then the route crosses both the Amyl and the Taigisch ( Тайгиш ), a tributary of the Amyl. On the left bank following the Taigisch the line reaches Yermakovskoye ( Ермаковское ). From here the route becomes a mountain railway. It first follows the Taigisch, crosses it to Nasarowski ( Назаровский ) and then follows the right bank of the Little Taigisch ( Малый Тайгиш ). In order to gain height, the route extends side valleys and crosses the tributaries in them with high bridges, some of which are designed as turning viaducts . Above the Maly Taigisch passing point, the route leads through steep rocky slopes far above the valley floor. After the route has crossed the watershed between the Tuba and Yenisei rivers at 1260 m above sea level, it follows the Us river and meets the M-54 highway , which also follows the Us. The train leaves the Us at about 700 m and climbs up a left side valley towards the border between the Krasnoyarsk region and the republic of Tuva . At Kurtushibinsk ( Куртушибинск ) the route leads through a 668 m long tunnel under the border and then runs with little gradient through the plain near Turan before it crosses the Ujukski ridge with a tunnel and reaches the Eerbek ( Ээрбек ) station , where the The route to the Elegest mine branches off, while the other part continues a few kilometers to Kyzyl.
