The Mariánské Lázně – Karlovy Vary railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the Marienbad – Karlovy Vary Railway. It begins in Marianske Lazne ( Marienbad ) and runs over Bečov nad Teplou ( Petschau ) by the Tepltal to Karlovy Vary ( Carlsbad ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

Prehistory and construction

On December 25, 1886, the Austrian government issued a concession for a local railway between Marienbad and Karlsbad with branches to Elbogen and Merkelsgrün . For financial reasons, however, construction did not start. On May 21, 1896, the Marienbad – Karlsbad railway was granted a new concession for railway construction, with the result that the old concession expired. The branch lines listed above were no longer included and were later approved as independent local railways.

The new line was opened on December 17, 1898.

business

The operation was carried out from the beginning by the kk Austrian State Railways (kkStB) on behalf of the Marienbad – Karlsbad Railway . After the First World War, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD took the place of the kkStB .

On January 1, 1925, the Marienbad – Karlsbad railway was nationalized by law and the line was integrated into the ČSD network.

Since the route was the shortest connection from Vienna to Karlsbad, express trains also ran before the First World War.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The connection was now included in the Reich curriculum as KBS 166d Marienbad – Karlsbad. After the end of the Second World War , the line came back to the ČSD.

simplified elevation profile of the route

Since December 10, 2006, the Mariánské Lázně – Karlovy Vary line has been operated by the private railway GW Train REGIO as , succeeding Viamont as .

The 2008 timetable provided for a total of nine pairs of passenger trains on working days. Another five pairs of trains are used between Bečov nad Teplou and Karlsbad, which condense the timetable on this section to an approximate hourly rate . Individual trains also ran through to and from Zwickau in Saxony in cooperation with Vogtlandbahn .

Since 2011, the operation has been taken over by VIAMONT's successor GW Train Regio as. The timetable on the line remained largely unchanged when it was taken over, but there are now no more trains to Sokolov or further to Zwickau in Saxony.

Vehicle use

In the first years of operation, the train service was mainly carried out with the tried and tested tank locomotives of the kkStB series 99 . The 60 series was also used in front of freight trains .

Until 2006, the operation was carried out with the proven railcars of the ČD series 810 . The four-axle railcars of the 820 series were also used until the mid-1990s .

Between 2006 and 2011 the route was operated with the Vogtlandbahn regional sprinter .

Until 2015, traffic was handled with class 810 and class 813 railcars from GW Train Regio as. In between, the Regioshuttle type railcars ran .

Since 2016, ČD has been running the weekend between Karlovy Vary and Horní Slavkov-Kounice, railcars of the 810 series and regional sprinters from GW Train Regio as on full routes.
