The Neunkirchen – Neunkirchen-Heinitz railway is a former single-track , standard-gauge railway in Neunkirchen (Saar) in Saarland .

It served mainly as a connecting railway for the Heinitz mine and the Dechen mine and continued to build as far as Wellesweiler just before the frontier between the Kingdom of Prussia and the Kingdom of Bavaria . There there was a connection to the Palatinate Ludwig Railway in Bexbach .

history

At the instigation of the Prussian state , the railway line for the development of the coal mines in Heinitz , now part of Neunkirchen, was planned and built from 1843 onwards.

On September 7, 1850, the first coal train in what was then Saarland started at Heinitz station, and the line between Heinitz and Neunkirchen was officially opened on September 15, 1850 a week later. The section to Wellesweiler was finally put into operation on October 20, 1850. Today it is part of the Homburg – Neunkirchen railway line , which was built as part of the Ludwig Railway to transport coal.

In 1857 the Dechen mine at Heinitz station was connected to the railway line.

During the great colliery death in the middle of the 20th century, the Neunkirchen mines were not spared. The Heinitz mine was shut down on November 24, 1962. The Dechen mine was subordinated to the König mine , initially at the administrative level, then the breakthrough took place on August 19, 1963. On January 1, 1964, the two pits were merged and the Dechen open-air facility was taken out of service.

With the closure of the two pits, the railway line lost its main task. Rail traffic was gradually discontinued, the last section between Neunkirchen and Dechen was finally shut down in 2000.
