The Pedace – San Giovanni in Fiore railway , also known as the Sila Railway, was a narrow-gauge railway with 950 mm gauge from Pedace to San Giovanni in Fiore in the southern Italian region of Calabria . The line was operated continuously from Cosenza on the Cosenza-Pedace-Catanzaro line to its end point at San Giovanni in Fiore.

history

Since 2010 only tourist trains have been running. Station Camigliatello Silano with a train of historic cars.

In 1911, the Mediterranea-Calabro-Lucane (MCL) commissioned the project for a narrow-gauge railway between Cosenza and Crotone . On October 11, 1922, the MCL was able to hand over the first section from Pedace to San Pietro in Guarano . On August 10, 1931, the continuation to Camigliatello Silano followed and only on May 6, 1956, the last section to San Giovanni in Fiore. The planned extension of the railway line from San Giovanni in Fiore to Petilia Policastro was never realized.

After the accident on the Fiumarella Viaduct on December 23, 1961, the MCL authorities withdrew the concession and in 1964 the operation was handed over to Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL). At the beginning of 1991, the fragmented network of the FCL was split up. The network starting in Bari came to the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL), the routes from Cosenza and Gioia Tauro to the Ferrovie della Calabria (FC).

In 1997, rail operations on the Camigliatello Silano – San Giovanni in Fiore section, in 2008 between Spezzano and Camigliatello and in 2010 on the rest of the route, were suspended. Museum trains run between Moccone and San Nicola-Silvana Mansio on weekends.

Route description

As an adhesion railway between Pedace and the culmination point in San Nicola-Silvana Mansio, the highest train station in Italy, the line overcame a difference in altitude of around 1000 meters. In addition to gradients of up to 60 per thousand, various engineering structures were necessary:
