The Polch – Münstermaifeld line was a single-track, non-electrified branch line in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

As early as March 1890, a company from Koblenz tried unsuccessfully to apply for a concession for a railway line from Kobern-Gondorf via Münstermaifeld and Polch to Mayen . After the failure of this project Munstermaifeld received 26 years later, a railway connection: the branch line branched at the station Polch from the 1904 opened distance Koblenz-Lützel Mayen East , and ended in Münstermaifeld. Construction work began on this in 1912. They were delayed by the outbreak of the First World War , so that the 10.13 km long route was only opened on March 16, 1916. For the winter timetable 1922/23, the (old) 2nd class was no longer available on all trains. They only led the 3rd and 4th carriage classes.

Travel remained modest and passenger traffic was stopped on September 30, 1961. For a long time the goods traffic was very strong, even if it was seasonal, mainly for the transport of agricultural products (mainly sugar beets ). In Münstermaifeld there was an elaborate loading ramp as well as two vehicle scales on the street side opposite the reception building. The dispatch was carried out by the train drivers, who stayed on small observation towers and remotely controlled the shunting locomotive from there. On the north side of the station was the engine shed and a siding to an agricultural warehouse.

Freight traffic also ended on March 15, 1983, the line was closed on December 9, 1983 and dismantled in 1985. In the 1990s, a railway cycle path was set up which is part of the Maifeld cycle path .
