The Târgu Mureș – Deda – Gheorgheni railway is a main line in Romania . It runs along the Mureș River in eastern Transylvania .
history
The railway line was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the territory of Hungary within the Habsburg dual monarchy . After the commissioning of the lines from Alba Iulia to Târgu Mureș in 1871 and from Sfântu Gheorghe to Adjud in Romania in 1897/1899, further areas in eastern Transylvania were to be opened up for traffic. Gheorgheni (ung. Gyergyószentmiklós ) received a rail connection from the south as early as 1907. Almost at the same time, a railway was built through the wide Mureș valley from the west. In 1909 the line was completed.
After the First World War , the region came to Romania; the route was taken over by the Romanian state railway Căile Ferate Române . As a result of the Second Vienna Arbitration , the route was temporarily returned to Hungary from 1940 to 1944.
Todays situation
The line is single-track and electrified from Deda to Gheorgheni. The latter section is part of the important long-distance connection from Brașov to Satu Mare . Several express trains run on it every day. Freight traffic continues to play a major role. The section from Târgu Mureș to Deda is of somewhat less importance .
