Bahuriband or Bahoriband (sometimes with an “h” at the end, Hindi बहोरीबंद ) is the capital of a sub- district ( tehsil ) in the Katni district in the historical Bundelkhand region in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .
Location and climate
The small town of Bahuriband is located in the riverless hilly landscape south of the Ganges plain about 43 km southwest of the district capital Katni and almost 80 km north of Jabalpur at an altitude of approx. 425 m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 1175 mm / year) falls mainly in the summer monsoon season .
Population development

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of smallholder farms, unemployment and rural poverty have risen significantly; many people therefore seek their happiness even in the smaller cities ( rural exodus ). The male part of the population only exceeds the female population by about 5%. One speaks Hindi and Bundeli .
economy
The inhabitants of the small town and its surrounding area live primarily directly or indirectly from agriculture; Retail trade, handicrafts and day laborers dominate the city. But pilgrimage tourism in India also plays an important role.
history
Bahuriband has been an important center of Jainism since the Middle Ages . The Kalachuri ruler Gayakarna mentions in his rock inscription below the approx. 8 m high Shantinatha statue that a certain Mahabhoja built a temple in honor of Shantinath and that the Acharya Subhadra consecrated the statue . The dating is largely illegible - the Indologist Alexander Cunningham reads 1027 or 1047; the epigrapher Dr. Suman believes he can decipher the year 1125 or 1182.
Attractions
- The main attraction of the place is the Jain temple with its approximately 8 m high monolithic Shantinath statue, the hands hang down at the sides (kyotsarga) . Its appearance largely corresponds to the somewhat older, but also monolithic Bahubali statue of Shravanabelagola .
- Surroundings
- Only about 3 km southwest, at a place called Rupnath , there is an Ashoka Rock Edict .
- The Gupta temples of Tigawa and Kunda are only about 4 north and 8 km northeast, respectively.
