The first Bainbridge of the United States Navy was a brig of twelve guns . It was on April 26, 1842 at Boston Navy Yard on keel laid and on 16 December 1842 the command of ZF Johnston into service.

From September 26, 1843 to May 3, 1844, the Bainbridge sailed in the home fleet. Between June 26, 1844 to October 10, 1847 she was in Brazil - Squadron stationed. She served in the Africa Squadron from April 10, 1848 to July 2, 1850 . From September 1856 she drove in both the Brazil and Africa squadrons. The Bainbridge returned to Norfolk on September 10, 1856 .

After a layover from September 18, 1856 to April 28, 1858, Bainbridge left Hampton Roads, Virginia to join Commodore WB Shubrick. The Bainbridge reached Asunción , Paraguay , together with the squadron in January 1859. From September 17, 1860, the Bainbridge drove again with the Brazil and Africa squadron. After she reached Boston on November 9, 1860, she was decommissioned.

Back in service on May 1, 1861, the Bainbridge sailed to the Gulf of Mexico on May 21, 1861 and stayed there until June 1862. She brought up two schooners and was involved in the landing of a steamer . On August 3, 1862, the Bainbridge sailed from New York to join the East Gulf Blockade Squadron off Key West, Florida.

In September 1862 she was sent to Aspinwall , Panama , where a severe storm caught her between November 22nd and 24th . In this storm she lost u. a. Sails , cannons and much more. After extensive repairs , she reached New York in May 1863. On August 21, 1863, while she was sailing with the South Atlantic Blockade Squadron, she capsized with all but one of the men at Cape Hatteras .
