A devastating tsunami struck an Australian coastal city . For a group of survivors, an underground supermarket, which is now almost completely under water, and the associated underground car park, threaten to become a death trap. Among the survivors are Josh and Tina, who were once engaged to each other and who only met there by chance. The relationship between the two once fell apart when Tina's brother died in a shark attack while he was substituting for Josh in the maintenance of a lifebuoy. Tina is now in a relationship with Steven, which causes tension between the three even after the water ingress. A far bigger problem for the community of fate, however, is Doyle, who raided the market with his brutal partner Kirby shortly before the disaster. Policeman Todd, who injured his leg badly in the flood, is not of much help, as is his daughter Jaimie and the hysterical supermarket owner.

All of this becomes a minor matter, however, when two great white sharks make their way through the flooded city to the supermarket. The survivors Heather and Ryan also endured attacks by a shark in the underground car park. Another threatening situation has arisen in the supermarket as a result of aftershocks , power cables threaten to electrify the entire room and the shelves. Steven selflessly dives into the storage room, where he manages to turn off the electricity, which he pays with his life. After a few unsuccessful attempts to overcome the shark, it finally succeeds in getting him to a meat hook and restricting his movements with a rope. The bait is Kirby, who is overwhelmed by Doyle, who is rediscovering his conscience, after Kirby is about to do the same with Naomi.

Josh manages to defeat the sharks with weapons he has recovered from the trunk of Todd's company car. The survivors are also rescued from the underground car park. With united forces, the survivors manage to find a way out.

Background and review

Director Kimble Rendall, for whom Bait 3D was the greatest directorial work of his career to date, made a name for himself as the second unit director of well-known productions such as Matrix Reloaded and I, Robot . He also shot numerous music videos. The producers managed to win various well-known Australian mimes for the film.

The approximately $ 20 million Australian-Singaporean co-production premiered out of competition on September 1, 2012 at the Venice International Film Festival. The cinema premiere in Australia was September 20th. While the film was not well attended there, it developed into an unexpected box-office success in some European countries (including Italy), but especially in Asia. In Germany, the production was released on April 11, 2013 on DVD and Blu-ray.

The criticism was very different. Most of the script was panned and described as bland and stereotypical to idiotic. The plot is predictable, the characters are extremely cold. The positive reviews, however, portrayed the film as a worth seeing and amusing contribution to the genre, which put Hollywood films produced with comparable means in the shade.
