Balthasar Rösler
Balthasar Rösler (born December 22, 1605 in Heinrichsgrün , Bohemia, † July 23, 1673 in Altenberg ) was a German miner and mine separator. Occasionally he is also quoted as Balthasar Roessler .
Live and act
Balthasar Rösler was born in Heinrichsgrün (today: Jindřichovice , Czech Republic ) in 1605 . When the Counter Reformation reached Bohemia in the 1620s, the Protestant Rösler emigrated to the Evangelical Electorate of Saxony . He worked in the Freiberg and Marienberg mining operations until 1634 , after which his living conditions deteriorated to such an extent due to the Thirty Years' War that he returned to Bohemia and settled in Graslitz , where he worked as a shift supervisor from 1634 to 1649and director of an iron hammer mill. When a new wave of recatholization reached Bohemia and the mining and metallurgical industry in Graslitz continued to decline, Rösler went back to Saxony. Until 1663 he worked as a mine surveyor , Mountain officials and trades in Freiberg, after which he was appointed in Altenberg for Bergmeister of the mining authority. He held this position until his death.
Merits
His hanging compass with cardan suspension , which was introduced into the Saxon mining industry in 1633, brought about an immense improvement in mining work. Until the introduction of the theodolite in the 19th century, it was the most important instrument of the Markscheider.
In his work Speculum metallurgiae politissimum - brightly polished Berg-Bau-Spiegel , he summarized his many years of experience in mining. It was published in 1700 by his grandson Johann Christoph Goldberg and became an important textbook in the art of mining.
In addition, Rösler drew up a series of exact pit plans.
