The Banas (also Western Banas ) is a tributary of the Kleiner Rann of Kachchh in western India in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat .
The Banas rises in the Aravalli Mountains 7 km east of the city of Sirohi at an altitude of about 430 m . It flows in a south-westerly direction through the mountains. He passes the cities of Pindwara and Abu Road . After 80 km, it is dammed 17 km north of Palanpur by the Dantiwada dam . Shortly afterwards the Sipu , the most important right-hand tributary of the Banas, flows into the river. The town of Deesa is on the left bank of the river. The Banas continues its course towards the southwest. The Narmada Main Canal crosses the course of the river 25 km west of Patan . Then the Khari , the most important tributary on the left, meets the Banas. The Banas now flows through a semi-desert landscape in a west-southwest direction 6 km south of Radhanpur . The course of the river ends in the Kleiner Rann of Kachchh. This salty marshland lies at the eastern end of the Gulf of Kachchh , a bay in the Arabian Sea . The lower reaches of the Banas only carry water during flood periods.
The Banas has a length of 266 km. Its catchment area covers 8674 km².
