Bandundu (formerly Banningville or Banningstad ) is the capital of the Kwilu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It has 117,200 inhabitants (as of 2004) and is 400 km from Kinshasa .
General
There are no industrial companies in Bandundu and the residents are either employed by the state or the provincial administration, but mostly live from agriculture or small-scale trade. In terms of tourism, the city and the surrounding area offer little.
Bandundu has a small airport and a small port on Kwilu , both of which are rarely served. The road connection to Kinshasa is - for the conditions in the DR Congo - relatively good. Bandundu can only be reached by land by ferry across the Kwilu, Kwango or Kasai .
Plane crash in 2010
When a Let L-410 of the regional airline Filair crashed in Bandundu on August 25, 2010, 20 out of 21 passengers were killed. According to the only surviving passenger, another passenger is said to have smuggled a crocodile on board, which was released from a bag shortly before landing. During a subsequent mass panic, the passengers ran into the front part of the plane, whereupon the center of gravity shifted and it crashed (see also the crash of a Let L-410 of Filair near Bandundu ) .
