Life

Karl Joseph Toeschi was the most important son of the Italian composer and violinist Alessandro Toeschi (around 1700–1758), who led the famous Mannheim court orchestra with Johann Stamitz as concertmaster. There is little information about Karl Joseph's musical training. Johann Adam Hiller reports that he was “a very skilled concert violinist until his 22nd year”.

Karl Joseph Toeschi first appeared as a violinist in the Mannheim orchestra in 1752 at the age of 20/21. In 1755 he was followed by his brother Johann Baptist Toeschi (1735–1800). In 1759, at the age of 27, Karl Joseph was appointed concertmaster together with Christian Cannabich . Between 1759 and 1773 he visited Paris several times . There he played as a violinist in the Concert spirituel and published many works with the Paris publishers, e. B. at La Chevardière, Huberty and Venier. During this time he composed around 46 symphonies and 50 chamber music works. In 1774, at the age of 43, Karl Joseph Toeschi was appointed director of the cabinet music.

After Karl Theodor was appointed Elector of Bavaria in 1778 and had to move his residence to Munich, Toeschi took over the direction of chamber music there. He died on April 12, 1788 at the age of 56 in Munich.
