Bandyliiga

The Bandyliiga (Finnish) or Bandyligan (Swedish) is the highest league in Finnish bandy sport .

history

The first Finnish championship in bandy was held in 1908. Even before ice hockey and football, bandy was the first team sport in which a Finnish national champion was determined. Until 1972, the Finnish bandy sport was still organized under the umbrella of the Finnish Football Association, since then the championships have been organized by the Finnish Bandy Association (Suomen Jääpalloliitto) .

Except for the war years of 1918, 1940 and 1942, a champion has been determined every year since the league was founded. Bandy clubs from Viipuri (German: Wiburg ) and Helsinki dominated the championships until the Second World War . Helsingfors IFK is the most successful club in Finland with 17 championship titles.

The Bandyliiga is now a semi-professional league; it is also an important reservoir of young talent for the Swedish Elitserien , the only professional bandy league in the world.
