Banton

Banton is a Filipino municipality in the province of Romblon , in the administrative region IV-B, Mimaropa. It has 5536 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census). It is classified as a fifth income class community in the Philippines and as partially urbanized .

Banton is located in the north of the province on a small archipelago that includes the islands of La Carlota, Isabela and Bantoncillo. The islands are of volcanic origin. Their topography is characterized by flat, undulating terrain.

In Banton in 1936 a team of anthropologists from the University of the Philippines in Manila researched the extraordinary funeral rites on the island. The island's population only buried the heads of the dead, which had previously been skeletonized and laid out in small groups in wooden coffins on rock walls in the Guyangan Cave. The intricately woven fabrics in which the coffins were wrapped were also examined. Age determinations showed that this burial method was used by the islanders from the 12th to the 14th centuries. Examples of this type of burial can be seen in the Museum of the Philippines in Manila.
