geography

The headwaters of the Bao Bolong are located in the Senegalese region of Kaffrine . Its upper course has the character of a dry valley that only carries water in the rainy season. The valley head furthest from the mouth with the longest valley path is on the northern edge of the Forêt Classée de Maka Yop Est near the village of Sintiou Nguérane , northwest of the town of Koungheul and east of the town of Malem Hodar . The headwaters are 114 kilometers northeast of the approximately 100 meter wide estuary in the Gambia River as the crow flies . There are extensive mangrove forests there . This estuary, which the Bao Bolong flows south through, has been protected as Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve since 1996 and is located on the other bank across from Kiang West National Park .

The addition Bolong , which has many tributaries of the Gambia, means "moving water" or "tributary" in the Mandinka language .
