Barbara Cassin (born October 24, 1947 in Boulogne-Billancourt ) is a French philosopher and classical philologist.

Life

Cassin is the daughter of a painter and a lawyer and attended the Lycée Pasteur in Neuilly-sur-Seine and the Lycée Fénelon in Paris. In 1968 she submitted a master's thesis (Maitrise) to the Sorbonne on the logical foundations of ontology in the correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Antoine Arnauld . At that time she began to deal intensively with Martin Heidegger and met Heidegger in Paris. She also worked as a translator, for example for Hannah Arendt . She studied at the Center Léon Robin of the Sorbonne and the University of Lille and received her doctorate in 1974 from the University of Paris XIII (Saint Denis) with a dissertation on the pseudo-Aristotelian treatise On Melissus, Xenophan and Gorgias (published as Si Parmenide ). While preparing for her state examination as a teacher ( CAPES ), she worked in adolescent psychiatry from 1974 to 1976. From 1975 to 1979 she was given courses in the Psychoanalysis Department of the University of Vincennes. In 1976 she was in the German Academic Exchange Program at the University of Freiburg and in 1978 in Heidelberg. From 1979 to 1984 she taught at grammar schools and from 1981 to 1984 she was Chargé de Cours at the University of Lille III (Classical Philology Department). She then taught and researched at the Center Léon Robin at the Sorbonne, became a researcher at the CNRS (from 1996 Research Director) and, in 2006, succeeded Jonathan Barnes as director of the Center Leon-Robin at the Sorbonne . She gave up in 2010 to become director of the Collège international de philosophie , where she had been teaching since 1984. There she was research director from 1988 to 1992 and edited his journal Revue Descartes .

In 1994 she completed her habilitation (Doctorat d'État) at the University of Paris IV ( L'Effet sophistique ). From 1993 to 2000 she coordinated the work on a European dictionary of philosophy, which appeared in 2004 and deals with different meanings in the various European languages ​​(the subtitle is Dictionary of Untranslatable ).

She dealt with sophistics and rhetoric in their relationship to philosophy in both ancient and modern environments; it is influenced by Martin Heidegger as well as by analytical philosophy of language ( Linguistic Turn ) and psychoanalysis ( Jacques Lacan ).

From 1991 to 2007 she and Alain Badiou edited the series L'Ordre Philosophique at Le Seuil (founded by François Wahl among others ). Both gave up after a conflict with the publisher, who did not want to publish Le Perçu by François Wahl. Instead, they founded the Ouvertures series at Fayard . Since 2012 she has published the Simul series in Sao Paulo . She also organizes an exchange program with the University of Rio de Janeiro. A number of her books have appeared in Portuguese. In addition, in the 1990s after the end of apartheid , she took part in setting up a rhetoric school at the University of Cape Town .

In 2018 she became a member of the Académie française , whose Grand prix de philosophie she received in 2012, and in 2018 she received the CNRS gold medal . In 2014 she became a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

She is married to Étienne Legendre, who runs an equestrian center, and has two sons.
