Barbara Jatta (born October 6, 1962 in Rome ) is an Italian art historian and has been the director of the Vatican Museums since January 1, 2017 .

Life

Barbara Jatta first studied art history at the University of Rome , which she completed in 1986 with a thesis on the history of graphics . A year later, she obtained another diploma in archival science , palaeography and diplomatics . She completed various internships in England, Portugal and the United States. In 1991 she was in the subject art history doctorate .

From 1981 to 1996 she worked for the Istituto nazionale per la grafica in Rome as a curator and in cataloging. Since 1994 she has been teaching the history of technology and art history of graphics ( Storia delle tecniche e delle arti grafiche ) at the Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples. In 2005 she became a member of the Gruppo dei Romanisti .

From 1996 to 2016 she headed the Cabinet for Prints in the Vatican Museums. In 2010 she was given by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed curator of prints in the Vatican Library . She has curated numerous exhibitions and is a member of the acquisitions and exhibitions commissions of the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums. Since summer 2016 she has been Vice Director of the Vatican Museums; In December 2016, Pope Francis appointed her to succeed the previous director Antonio Paolucci , who had held the office since 2007.

Barbara Jatta is married to the pediatrician and university professor Fabio Midulla and the mother of three children.
