Barbara Pferdehirt , also Barbara Oldenstein-Pferdehirt , (* April 1949 ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist . She was director of the Roman Age department at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz .

From 1967 to 1974 horse herdsman studied Roman provincial archeology, ancient history as well as prehistory and early history at the universities of Bonn and Frankfurt am Main . On June 26, 1974, she received her doctorate from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . From July 1, 1974, she was employed as a research assistant and from October 1, 1974 as a research assistant at the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt am Main. From July 29, 1981 to March 31, 1982 she was a member of the Commission as Scientific Councilor.

On April 1, 1982, she got a job as a scientific conservator at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz. Horse herdsman remained in this position until 1989. From 1990 to 2004 she was the first director of the newly established research area Ancient Shipping of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum. She led the conversion of the former locomotive repair workshop of the Hessian Ludwig Railway to the Museum for Ancient Shipping , which was inaugurated in 1994, and took care of its content presentation. On September 1, 2004, Pferdehirt was appointed director of the Roman Age Department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum and from 1994 to 2013 also ran the guest house of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum. She retired on April 30, 2014.

Pferdehirt is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and was on the Board of Trustees and Scientific Advisory Board of the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven from September 19, 2003 . She is also a member of the Trier Archaeological Commission. In addition, on February 1, 1980, she took over the editing of the specialist journal Germania and had previously worked for the Limes Research series and Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani . Until she left the service of the Roman-Germanic Commission in 1982, she was responsible for the editorial offices of Germania and Limes Research .

Her main areas of work include sigillata research , Roman economic history, Roman military history, Roman law and Roman urban development.
